Re-Capping a Pioneer CLD-V870 Laserdisc Player Power Supply
Recently, I received a dead Pioneer CLD-V870 Karaoke style Laserdisc player. When plugged in, there was no standby light.
I performed the usual step of removing D105 surge suppressor from the power board since this commonly failed on some later models. I clipped both ends and removed it, then replaced the fuse with a known working one.
Still, the standby light nor the unit would come on.
Next, I had to manually wind the gears to get the tray to eject. Once the tray was out, the power supply could be safely unscrewed and removed. I inspected the board and found a number of capacitors. Rather than troubleshoot one by one, I took an inventory and ordered replacement caps from Digi-Key. I saved the list of capacitors for VWR1269. Link here
Before de-soldering any of the old caps, it is a good idea to mark the tops of each cap with the same directional line. In my case, I drew a line pointing towards the front of the unit. This way, I can look at this in case I forget later which way the cap was positioned on the board.
Most of the capacitors are easy to remove, simply de-solder one side at a time on the underside of the board. The larger capacitors normally have some kind of glue to help anchor them down. I removed the glue with a small pair of pliers to free the capacitor.
When all of the capacitors are removed, ensure you have clean through holes so you can install the new capacitors. Solder wick can help remove excess solder in the holes.
Optional step, but you can test the old capacitors if you were unsure of which ones may have been failing. This one tested fine.
Here is a comparison of one of the larger capacitors - old on left and new on right
Finally, here is an overhead shot of the power supply with new capacitors. There isn't much of a difference except maybe for some capacitors that are differently sized.
Once the power supply was installed back in the player, the standby light came on the player came to life!
This power supply, the VWR1269-A was popular in a few late model players, namely CLD-V870, CLD-V880, CLD-D505, CLD-D605 and CLD-D606
